Signed on April 9, 1865, General Lee formally surrendered the Norther Virginia Army. By doing so, the Union had officially won the Civil War after 4 years of battle. Grant offered Lee very favorable surrender terms. The men of the Confederate army would be allowed to keep their horses and mules for farming. None of the men would be arrested for treason, and all would be allowed to return home. The troops had to stockpile their weapons and pledge to never take up arms against the Union again. The officers in the army would be allowed to keep their firearms.
