Called one of the greatest politicians of his time, the Kentucky born Clay served in both the Senate and the House of Representatives, where he had several stints as the Speaker of the House. Often called the "Great Compromiser" he was instrumental in the Compromises of 1820 and 1850. This Compromises only forestalled the slave issue that reached the breaking point with the Civil War.
